A Little Christmas Drink?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

Im not talking large amounts of alcohol but even just a glass of wine seems to have a big effect!

It feels more like Ive drunk a bottle!

I do have tinnitus and a echoing feeling in one ear but after one drink this is 10 times worse and also my balance.

Im a cheap night out now :-)

Does anyone else have this?

Happy sober Christmas xx

I've not dared try it yet. I feel like I'm in a permanent hungover state anyway what with the effect of my shunt managing my head pressure and titinus so the thought of that combined with alcohol scares me a bit.

My neuro team said the effects would be exaggerated? Is that true?

I figure Ive drunk my fair share over the years though

I've been making non alcoholic cocktails which make drinks more interesting and I wasn't really a wine drinker before then so dont miss that.

I totally empathise. I’m quite an embarrassment after drinking half a shandy!

I asked my consultant about the effect of alcohol post SAH.

He said that the injured brain has to work harder to get through things, so a healthy brain can cope with higher levels of alcohol than an injured one. Our brains are not working at full capacity to start with and as alcohol reduces brain function in everyone, we feel the effects quicker than most.

I find drinking water alongside my drink is helpful and can make it seem that you're drinking for a longer duration.

Have to admit I'm not able to drink much either. At first I was afraid to try because I had the hangover feeling like Daffodil. But now I will have a frothy eggnog with some spiced rum. A big mug with 2 shots and then I'm smiling and sleepy. No dancing! it was the earache and sore throat that got me trying the rum.

If I'm in a social setting I use the same tactic as Lynne. A drink will last me a long time and I've had more water than booze when I'm done for the night. I hold onto railings, tables, and Peter's arm when I'm sober so can't imagine what a mess I'd be in if I were drunk!

Well, shame on me!!!!!! I can drink beer like a man! I do not do it daily but every 10 days or so I can down a beer in 3 gulps such a welcome satisfying taste from water!!!!!! My limit I am ashamed to admit is 5 maybe 6 and I cannot say I feel it much at all. If I know I am going to have alcohol I cut back on other meds that day but I never can sleep well if I drink.

Hello,

Good question. I drink when I feel well enough to, but thats not often. My day is a 24 hour hangover. But I do find it affects me much more than it used to when I do imbibe.

As always the voice of reason Lin has it right. I always drink water with my vodka. And drink tons of water before I go to bed.

I have a little drink every now and then, but not like I used to. I stay completely away from wine, I can't touch even a drop. I am fine with a shandy, cider and bailey's (oh yes, I've been experimenting!) but not wine. If I've had wine, the following day it feels like the connection between my brain and hands has been cut and that's just not worth it to me. Once, I lost all memory of the night before for the sake of a couple of glasses of wine and that was way too much like how I was when in ICU and who wants to do that to themselves? Not me! Alcohol doesn't affect me much at the time of drinking really, but when I do drink I can really feel the difference the next day. I'll be more tired and lethargic. Things are much harder to do, like the early days really!

Most of you are aware I like a Lemonade;-)

I remember asking my GP about drinking Alcohol, he said, with moderation.

Not forgetting eveyones consumption levels are different.

Prior to my Stroke, I was a Social Drinker, many time I over socialised!!

Now, Yes I drink, but no more than 3 pints in a session. YES, I HAVE drunk more, but that's usually indoors.

I find it more interesting people watching, then think back what I used to be like!!

Sitting with either a Beer Shandy or Soft drink doesn;t botherme,

I loved my Vino collapso but not had a drop since the SAH, I had a drink day of SAH so not tried it since and I loved a drink but like

Daff what with shunt etc I wont chance it.

Saw a cookery programme where they put crushed ice and ginger (I like ginger) and crushed fruit and lemonade ? etc and I thought hmmm that looks nice Win and fancied a drop of wine so turned it over lol

Good luck All, and if I cannot drink nor can you lol xx

I've had a few giggles reading this thread too. Like Keith, I quite like a 'lemonade' but I prefer my lemonade to be cola (with some spicy rum in it )

I was told by the brain injury support worker that alcohol has a more profound effect on people after a SAH i.e 1 pint to us is like 3 pints to someone else. I was also told when I left hospital that drinking post SAH should be in moderation only. Like Keith, I put my own slant on 'moderation' I have also noticed a similar effect with pain killers - they can knock me out for hours, where others might just feel a little bit drowsy on the same dose.

I have also noticed that what I used to drink (vodka) is not a drink I can have any more. It makes me feel very, very drunk after 3 or 4 & affects my balance & memory of the night quite severely. I tend never to touch it now apart from occasionally in cocktails on the rare occasions I go for a night out. Baileys, or at least the cheaper version of it, also have a pretty drastic effect so it was interesting to read what others have said about it! Tongue in cheek, I would recommend spiced rum, it cures colds, sore throats and EVERYTHING

I did notice though, that this thread is on the untreated aneurysms page and it might be worth keeping in mind that alcohol does raise blood pressure so it would be good to have that in mind if you are in that situation? (Sorry, I am such a Christmas kill joy for pointing that out )

Yet I can actually drink more and until my knee made it painful for me to walk far was having a couple of pints of porter from our local real ale pub nightly.

Just a sip of red wine gave me a blinding headache pre SAH, now I can quite happily drink a full bottle and have no after effects. Not as though I do that very often although whilst I was in Gozo I drank 1/3rd of a bottle in my room and then had 1/2 a bottle with dinner.

That's a very good point Michelle, I had not spotted that. I'd like to add that I never have more than two drinks in a single ' session' and never more than once in a week. As with all things, the longer you go without, the less you miss it. And also, the worse you feel for indulging too. I used to drink quite regularly pre- sah and given how much I now notice the mental deficit the next day, I wonder why I liked it so much.

Ok, so I sound like a drunk here- well maybe Keith as welll :cool:

I do drink a glass of water with my alcohol - I also do not seem to even get a buzz but bet I would if I had a gin & tonic or vodka but both scare me. I cannot sip I guzzle as I am always thirsty.

Hi

I too have been experimenting a little in the run up to Christmas, to gauge what if anything I can tolerate as a festive drink with my nearest and dearest.

I have found that white wine spritzer with more soda than wine is my preferred drink right now. I can only manage one, it can last me all evening and leaves me feeling intoxicated, so definitely a cheap night out and a relatively sober Christmas.

There's always next year!

This will probably make me sound a little weird, but hey ho, I'm amongst friends...

I find that a weak shandy is a nice drink post SAH. When at home, I drink it out of a wine glass to trick my brain into thinking that I'm drinking something more substantial. I even drink water out of a wine glass - it makes me feel that I'm joining in on the fun!
