Two untreated aneurysms

I haven't introduced myself yet but briefly here I will say, I had a SAH in June 2007 which was clipped & was very lucky to make a good recovery apart from ongoing headaches etc.

I was told I also have 2 other anuerysms & the choice to leave or treat with coiling has been left to me to decide.

I am at the moment still undecided.

Hi and welcome to the website ..... hope that you have found it useful....

I can well imagine that making a decision about the 2 untreated aneurysms is a hard one to make and not one to make lightly.

I've had a warning bleed (untreated) and a SAH approx. 4 years later form the same aneurysm, which left me a lot worse off.... I can only speak from a personal point of view, as my aneurysm hasn't been totally occluded and I'm due back for another scan this year ..... but, I would definetly have it retreated and take a risk, rather than suffer a third re-bleed and all that it entails.

Good luck with your decision and you have to do what's good for you .... nobody can tell you, as we're all very different. xx

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the welcome, I only found the site yesterday so I haven't had chance to explore fully yet.

Sorry your treatment wasn't totaly successful, was it ever suggested that it should be clipped? Rather drastic but more total I believe.

Mine was clipped as they were unable to treat it with coiling. I seem to be having more pains in my head & over my left eye now than I did in the early months.

Hi Mo,

Yes, I've been left with a neck on my aneurysm ...... I've sort of come to terms with the fact that this could cause future problems and that I'll maybe need more treatment. I spent many months coming to terms with that news though.... it's not something that you want to hear.

I think that coiling is the first option considered, if the annie's in a place where they can reach it ..... I shall just have to see what happens at my next scan and find out if the annie neck has grown...... I try not to worry about it too much now, as at one point, the thought of it all was starting to drive me around the bend! :)

I still get quite a bit of head and eye pain ..... it takes a while to get used to the rollercoaster ride post SAH ..... it's always worse if I'm stressed or overtired.

Hi Mo, welcome, i'm a newbie too and have found this site very informative and they are such a lovely friendly bunch of people, like you i'm just finding my way around.

I empathise with you completely about making the decision regarding you two untreated aneurysms, it took me about two months of agonising and soul searching to decide to have mine treated although i hadn't previously had a bleed. I have to say it has been the hardest decision of my life to date and not one i would wish to be faced with again. I do feel a certain amount of relief now having made the decision but am frustrated by the slow grinding wheels of the NHS.

Pleased to meet you Mo and best wishes. Julie

Hi Julie,

Pleased to meet you too. It is a difficult choice to make, have you been waiting very long since you gave your decision?

I was told to take my time deciding, sometimes I forget all about it & other days it stays in my mind. It's like having a bad dream & hoping you will wake up!

We are very lucky to have so many excellent surgeons etc in this country, just thinking of all those children etc who are suffering with terrible diseases all over the world makes me realise how lucky I am.

Keep in touch

Best wishes

Maureen

Hi Maureen,

I see you're in Alton, does that mean that you are being treated in the Wessex Neuro Centre in Southampton? If so you are right there are a large number of excellent neuro surgeons down there in Southampton. We have a SAH support group down there on the first Thursday of every other month, I still find it helpful (although after four years it has become more social than anything else!).

There were a lot of people there last time, in fact if anyone here has been we filled that seminar room up! You also get the chance to ask rather more technical questions in front of an "expert", last time we had my Consultant Mr. Duffield. Of course there are also the two specialist SAH nurses who do a wonderful job (Sarah and Lesley) .

Hi Scott,

Yes I was operated on in Southampton, Mr Duffield was the surgeon, when I came round I actually thought I had been on holiday would you believe!

I haven't been to any of the support group meetings yet, I'm always so tired by the evening!

I do try & keep fit by walking 2 or 3 miles a day with my husband & the dogs, although tired I sleep better at night now than before the SAH.

Have you looked at the informative website that I believe Lesley and others from Wessex & Manchester have published? Very informative, although I was given the booklet by Lesley which has much of the content in it.

Bye

Maureen

Ah Maureen... we share the same consultant! He will be the one who performs my surgery also. I gave my decision about a month ago and and am now waiting to have an angiography, however i was told that the wait for that could be about 6months. I forget sometimes too but when i'm feeling unwell its a constant reminder. Whereabouts in Hampshire are you? I'm in Christchurch so just on the the Hants/Dorset border, in fact have been out in the Forest today with my two dogs.. walking is an excellent way to relax and fully appreciate being alive...

HOpe you are well and having a good day. Julie X

I too have the same consultant ... not sure whether he actually carried out the coiling itself, think that it was somebody else .... but the guy that did the coiling, appears on the SAH DVD ..... Keith, put me right if I'm wrong, as I think that we had the same people looking after us.

The "coiling" is done by a radiologist rather than a neurosurgeon, so your consultant is not the person who would of put the coils in. She/he is the person in charge of your care and follow up.

I had the same misapprehension and had it explained to me post shunt (which Mr. Duffield did do!).

Hi Scott,

When I was in hospital I used to get the radiologist and the consultant confused....thought that they were the same person.....but the guy that put my coils in, was the person that appeared on the DVD ..... mind you, I can't remember his name either, but he had a very kindly manner and a very soft accent....

I stand corrected too; I have his name written down as Duffill but Duffield always stays in my mind, maybe because my daughter misheard so that was the name we all called him at first.

Never mind, nice man & he told me when I came round 3 days later that he had fixed mine for good!

I'm being kind of back to front but I will get around to my story soon if anyone is interested, quite a straight forward event.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't been very active on the Forum, I hadn't realised it's exactly a year since i joined. My other 2 aneurysms are still untreated but I will probably decide to go ahead this year if they have enlarged. I had an MRA last month so I should soon know the results.

I had succeeded to forget about them for the majority of the time. I have stll been very tired but do try to do at least 1.5 - 2 miles walking a day as I feel a lot more tired sitting too long.

Unfortunately I had 2 mini strokes Christmas Eve when I couldn't speak for about 5 mins, one was 2 am. I didn't know what it was at the time & couldn't tell anyone what I was feeling which was scary. I saw a doctor in the morning who sent me the hospital for tests & CT scan. They were going to keep me in overnight but I was allowed to go home in the evening once the doctor had prescribed medication.

Has anyone else here suffered a mini stroke?

Best wishes to all

Maureen

Hi Jess,

Thanks for the message. Do you suffer with tender areas around your head? One head surgery is bad enough but two must have been very scary at the time.

Hi Tina,

Thanks, I notice you had surgery also the same year, do you have any tender areas around your head?

I must say they don't cut more hair off than necessary!

I was lucky with my hair.....as i have so much lol.....where they shaved it on the side...they left a top section and as long...covered it.....has only just blended back in 14 months later !

Hi Mo

Yes it used to be very tender it's ok now though but it can take several years for the bones and stuff to go back together, and no it wasn't to frightening at 23 you think you will live forever  seriously though I hadn't got any kids or anything so I weren't too bothered it was only once Garry was born that I started to worry a bit. Speak again soon got to finish Garry's room you can't see any carpet at all  . Jess.xxx

Hi & thank you all for your messages, excuse me for not replying to you individually.

I had my SAH at 61 so I guess I must be one of the oldest here, makes me feel quite ancient!
